Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has axed Andros Townsend from his squad following a bust-up between fitness coach Nathan Gardiner and the player, Daily Star reports.
The England international was clearly disappointed to once again be left on the bench when Spurs beat Aston Villa 3-1 during the weekend, and took his frustrations out on Gardiner.
Pochettino was livid after pictures of the confrontation emerged in the media, and the Argentine immediately dropped Townsend from the first-team travelling to face Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday.
He said: “It was in public, there were pictures, we can’t hide it.
“When there is an action, there is a consequence. That is private.
“He did not train with the group. He is not available to be selected tomorrow.
“It’s because of Monday. You know. You behave in the wrong way you always need to pay.
“It’s always my decision if he is part of the squad. The discipline for me is very important. We have a young squad and the player made a mistake, and when you cross the limit it is important to stop that. I am very friendly but the discipline is very important.
“The staff need to show respect to the player and the player needs to show respect to the staff.”
With the 26-year-old already linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, the bust-up will certainly to push him closer to an exit amid summer interest from Villa, Sunderland, and Newcastle United.
The Lilywhites have been unbeaten since their opening day defeat to Manchester United, and are now pushing for a top four spot sitting in 5th.
Pochettino’s men will however have a tough task at keeping their form this weekend when they host Arsenal in the North London Derby.
