Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a transfer blow in their chase to sign Jay Rodriguez after Southampton revealed that he will be injured until February, Daily Star reports.
The 25-year-old has been out of action since he damaged his anterior cruciate ligament against Manchester City in April of last season.
Mauricio Pochettino was keen on bringing him to Spurs during the summer window and despite his lengthy injury, new Saints manager Ronald Koeman refused to let him leave.
It is now unlikely that Pochettino will make a move for Rodriguez after Koeman announced that he won’t make his return until February.
He said: “Jay had to make a step back in his recovery. He will not be available until after the end of January.
“That was a pity because when we spoke about the squad in pre-season we said Jay would be a good signing for December, January but he isn’t.
“He is now making steps forward but I don’t like to fix a date because that puts pressure on the player and medical staff.”
The attacker was in great form before his injury, scoring 15 goals in 30 match and was even lined up for a place in the England World Cup squad, but was later deemed unavailable.
