Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has rejected claims that the club made a £40million bid for Real Madrid star Karim Benzema, according to reports from the Express.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Manchester United also keen on his signature.
It was thought that the Gunners were leading the race for his services after reports emerged that the club submitted a £40million offer.
However, Wenger has come out to quash any suggestions that Arsenal have made contact with the La Liga giants in regards to a move for Benzema.
“I don’t know where that story has come from,” he said. “But that’s not happening at the moment.”
After the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti, Real appointed former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez to take over the Santiago Bernabeu helm, and the Spaniard has revealed that he is prepared to move Cristiano Ronaldo into a more central role.
This could therefore push Benzema down the pecking order, leaving the door open to an exit before the start of the season.
The former Lyon striker made 46 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 22 goals.
