Turki Al Al-Sheikh, the Saudi Arabian minister could reverse his decision to step down as president of Al Ahly and continue with his ambitious investment in the Egyptian club – but only if there are changes at boardroom level.

The club’s chairman Mahmoud Alkhatib has shown himself powerless to pressure from his deputy, El Amry Farouk, the former minister of sports under the rule of Muslim Brotherhood. Turki Al Al-Sheikh is one of the most prominent critics of the Brotherhood movement, which is where this key breakdown in relationship with the board stems from.

Furthermore, Turki Al Al-Sheikh is understood to be concerned that the engagement of Qatari-based Mohammed Abu Trika has been directed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The source close to Turki Al Al-Sheikh said: "Turki Al Al-Sheikh has not only financially invested unprecedented amounts in Al Ahly but emotionally too – he loves being part of the club and its passionate fans. He fears that if he walks away then the club would be in deep financial trouble.

"They are losing a potential investment of $1.3billion, which could lead to further problems with their new stadium construction. He also fears the problems for Al Ahly’s administration will continue as the Club face judicial issues and wants this addressed. He will commit to his previous promises but only if the Club’s board of directors distance themselves from current political conflicts.

"The Saudi minister has huge influence in the sports world, influence that can greatly benefit Al Ahly. He was negotiating for the Dutch coach Guus Hiddink and the famous Italian coach Luciano Spalletti to join Al Ahly, as well as the Venezuelan star Romulo Utero.

"The latter had agreed to terms with Minister Turki Al-Sheikh, but when the crisis broke out, he ended up at the Saudi club, Al-Wehda. Additionally, a series of international matches were also cancelled including matches that were to involve Barcelona in Cairo. Turki Al Al-Sheikh doesn’t want Al Ahly losing out, he wants the best for them!"
