Antonio Conte’s job security has been a hot topic for most of the season and the 3-1 home defeat against Tottenham looked to be just another nail in the coffin for the Italian.
Despite that, the Guardian have quoted Conte as saying he wishes to remain at Stamford Bridge next season, which may come as a surprise for some Blues fans.
Conte has clearly been unhappy and distracted since the start of this season and has overseen a campaign of underperformance at Stamford Bridge.
It has looked almost inevitable that the Italian would leave the club in the summer and he has carried an air of resignation for months now.
So, the quotes from Conte that: “the people who stay very close to me know very well my intentions – to stay here, to continue my job here. This is the truth. You will see,” are quite surprising.
The powers that be at Chelsea might well have other ideas about Conte’s future holds but it is quite the change of tune from Conte.
He really has looked like a man who had accepted his fate, potentially with one eye on a return to his native Italy but these quotes may well indicate that he has got his mojo back.
There is still the FA Cup to play for and while that wasn’t enough to save Louis van Gaal’s job at Manchester United, it has done wonders for Arsene Wenger in recent years and Conte may well hope for something similar if his side can navigate past Southampton and then one of Manchester United or Tottenham.
