United and Chelsea target “not going anywhere”

Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Roma defender Kostas Manolas.

Thats according to the Metro, who report the defender, also being linked with a move to Arsenal, will be staying at the club. Manager Luciano Spalletti has spoken out to squash any talk of a move:

“His intentions are clear, so there are no issues. Why not talk instead about the problem of writing about issues that are not there? Manolas will stay with us.” said Spalletti.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to England all summer, after starring for the Italian side last season in Serie A. Manolas played in 37 league games last year, as he helped Roma finish 3rd, 11 points adrift of champions Juventus.

United have already bought in one centre-back this summer, signing Eric Bailly from Villarreal. Arsenal and Chelsea haven’t added to their defensive ranks so far, and look unlikely to change that with addition of the Greek international.

Blues boss Antonio Conte was linked in particular with Manolas, as reports suggested he was ready to bring his taste of Serie A football with him to Stamford Bridge.
