United debutant admits boss was right to criticise his fitness

Manchester United’s latest debutant Luke Shaw has admitted that Louis van Gaal was right to criticise him for poor fitness following his arrival at Old Trafford, reports the Express.

Shaw only made his first United start in the win over West Ham yesterday, with the first part of his United career having been hampered by fitness issues.

“He was right to say what he said about me in pre-season,” said Shaw. “We had a discussion then and the plan for me was to get my fitness up. It worked, apart from the injury.”

Van Gaal was not happy with the shape Shaw was in following his £27million arrival from Southampton, and publicly criticised the 18-year-old.

He said: “Luke needs to be fit and he’s not very fit. He can’t perform how I want.”

The Dutchman has since praised the attitude of the England international, describing him as an ‘example’ for others to follow.

“For him to say I’m an example at a massive club like this is something to be really happy about,” Shaw said.

“It was a bit of setback but I’ve worked hard in the last weeks and had some talks. He’s been a great inspiration to me and hopefully I can carry that on.”
