United strikers miss Basel clash

Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez will both miss Manchester United’s Champions League tie against FC Basel on Tuesday, as the pair are sidelined with injuries.

Rooney sat out the 1-1 draw with Stoke at the weekend, and is suffering from a hamstring strain, whilst Hernandez has failed to shrug off a dead leg that saw him substituted against Tony Pulis’ men.

The pair did not train on Monday, and therefore Sir Alex Ferguson will have to choose between replacement forwards Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck and Dimitar Berbatov.

Berbatov has rarely featured for the Old Trafford outfit since finishing last season as the league’s top goalscorer, but his boss still believes the Bulgarian has a role to play.

“He is one of our squad members and they all have a part to play in the context of the number of games we have. It is an exhausting season unless you use all your squad,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, Fergie has a number of other players unavailable for the clash against the Swiss team, especially at the back.

Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans all missed Monday’s training session also, so it looks likely that Rio Ferdinand will partner Phil Jones at the heart of the Premier League champion’s rearguard.

United will look to pick up three points, after drawing 1-1 with Benfica in Portugal in their first match.
