Vidic praises ‘fighter’ Van Persie

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has praised new signing Robin van Persie, who feels that he can put up with physical treatment from opponents.

The Netherlands international moved to Old Trafford to Arsenal this summer, and has started well with the Red Devils by scoring four goals in two starts for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

Van Persie scored a hat-trick against Southampton at the weekend to give United a hard-fought 3-2 victory, and the Serbian centre-half feels that the player has adapted well to life at his new club.

“He is a fighter and he is not scared to play a hard game as well,” Vidic told The Guardian.

“We like him at United for that, I think. Away from home against Southampton he is not scared to receive the ball and have defenders on top of his back. This is important if you want to be top goalscorer here.

“When you are a good player it is easier to adapt [to a new club] but I think his desire to score plays a big part. You want to play nice football and have good touches and play nice … it’s good but I think that desire he showed to score his goals, this is top-class,” the eastern European stopper finished.
