Vidic set for United return

Manchester United are poised to welcome back Nemanja Vidic from injury for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

The Serbia international has missed the last seven games with a long-running nerve problem in his leg.

However, Vidic has retuned to training this week and could feature against Pompey.

His return is a timely one as United will be without the suspended Rio Ferdinand, while Brazilian right-back Rafael picked up a knock during last weekend’s 3-1 win at Arsenal.

Vidic could return to the heart of the defence alongside Jonny Evans, which would free Wes Brown to return to his more regular right-back role in place of Rafael.

“Rafa got a knock against Arsenal, but hopefully he’ll train today,” revealed Ferguson.

“Vidic has trained for the last few days and hopefully that will bring him into contention for Saturday. Everyone else is okay.”

Speaking about the momentum gained from last weekend’s success at the Emirates Stadium, Ferguson added:“Our result at the Emirates last week was an important one and hopefully it’ll send us in the right direction towards the title.

“Winning against Portsmouth is very important and it’s the kind of game we’ve navigated quite well over the years.

“After the win at Arsenal it’s important we kick on from here. As every game comes along in the run-in they become more important.

“It doesn’t matter who it’s against, we have to take three points from every one now.”
