Aston Villa are closing in on the appointment of former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, with the Italian set for a £35,000 per week deal according to The Sun.
The Birmingham-based outfit had a torrid 2015-16 and were relegated without much of a fight, with the ominous task of returning to the top flight from The Championship ahead of them.
Di Matteo has a mixed history on the dugout, with the retired midfielder winning the Champions League crown for the Blues only to be sacked a couple of months later.
A stint with German club Schalke, who have notoriously high expectations domestically, ended up in Di Matteo walking away from the Gelsenkirchen outfit and he has been out of work since.
Villa are expected to undergo a serious squad revamp this summer, with the core of the current group expected to be sold and big wages to be taken off the books.
