Southampton’s successful youth system deserves a lot of respect, believes Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Bale, who scooped both player of the season awards as well as the writers’ player of the year award, will welcome his former club to White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon as the north London side continue to push for the top four.
The Portuguese boss believes that producing players of the quality of Bale, and Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, is something that the south coast club should be admired for.
The former Chelsea boss believes that they should be held in the same regard as the likes of Barcelona and Lisbon, who also focus heavily on producing players through their academy systems.
Villas-Boas said: “”It is a great school of development.
“Southampton falls into the same category as Sporting Lisbon, like Barcelona, which is to nurture.
“Sometimes there are clubs that keep developing and nurturing players, then there are clubs that go for scouting.”
