Arsenal’s second largest stakeholder Alisher Usmanov has stated that the club must stick with Arsene Wenger and that the French manager is the club’s greatest asset.
The North London club have not won the Premier League since 2004 and the club’s fans have become frustrated with a number of near misses.
A section of the Emirates Stadium outfit’s fan base have called for a major change and for Wenger to step down as the side’s head coach.
With prestigious coaches such as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola coming available but the Gunners opting to stay true with Wenger, the Arsenal fans are split to some degree.
The North London outfit are struggling to win silverware this year, with elimination from the Champions League and FA Cup being compounded by struggles in the league.
Despite this, Usmanov has stated that the club must trust Wenger given all that he has done for Arsenal over the years.
“The club must retain its major symbol and main asset – manager Arsene Wenger,” The Telegraph quote the Russian as saying.
“Failures have been haunting Arsenal for many years now. They cannot become the EPL [Premier League] champions. This has led to some discontent with Wenger’s position as a manager.
“I believe that Arsene Wenger is a great coach, and Arsenal have to give him the opportunity to plan the succession process and leave his legacy when he deems it necessary.
“It is very important for the club to maintain the principles that were established by those people who created the victories. Arsenal need Arsene Wenger.”
