Manchester United defender Wes Brown is to undergo a medical at The Stadium of Light, as a potential transfer to Sunderland looks set to be completed.
Steve Bruce’s side have lodged a joint bid for the England international along with team-mates John O’Shea and Darron Gibson, but the 31-year-old looks likely to be the first of the three to move to Wearside.
Brown rose through the United youth ranks to make 361 appearances for the current Premier League champions, but with the emergence of younger players and the acquisition of Phil Jones this summer, may find first team opportunities at Old Trafford limited.
The versatile player has had a vastly successful spell with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, winning two Champions League titles, five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and two League Cups in his 15-year tenure at the club.
Fellow defender O’Shea looked set to move first, but his wife has given birth since the bid for the 30-year-old was accepted which has delayed a transfer. Sunderland’s rivals Newcastle are reportedly interested in Gibson and a bidding war may ensue.
