West Bromwich Albion captain Darren Fletcher revealed that he did all he can to ensure Jonny Evans left Manchester United to join him, according to reports from the Daily Star.
The 27-year-old was believed to have lost his place under manager Louis van Gaal after a string of disappointing performances last term and was eventually allowed to join West Brom in the summer.
Fletcher admitted that he phoned and texted the former United centre-back every day until he finally completed his switch from Old Trafford at the end of last month.
“He’s a great lad and I knew we were getting a top, top player – one of the best defenders I’ve ever played with at Manchester United and now here,” he said.
“I think everyone knew his quality, but I knew it especially and I was constantly on the phone to him. I probably did his head in, phoning and texting him every day.”
Evans began his new career with the club on great form as WBA have now picked up two consecutive clean sheets since his arrival.
His side registered a 0-0 draw with Southampton before picking up all three points in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa last weekend.
The two former Red Devils stars are now preparing for their upcoming fixture where they will face Norwich City in the Capital One Cup tomorrow.
