West Ham boss rules out move for Arsenal ace

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has dismissed reports that the Hammers are set to make a move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, as reported by Sky Sports.

Allardyce is desperate to sure up his back line which has conceded 16 goals in four games in 2014 without key man Winston Reid.

Roger Johnson has been signed on loan from League One Wolves, but he has struggled thus far and niggling injuries and suspensions to the likes of James Collins and James Tomkins has left a gaping hole in the East Enders back line.

Allardyce doesn’t think Arsene Wenger will let his Belgian defender leave on loan this month as his first team duties will become key as the season goes on.

“I think under the circumstances at Arsenal with the situation they’re in with the Champions League and cup matches, they’ve had to use him [Vermaelen] as soon as any of the two defenders are injured,” noted Allardyce.

“I don’t think there’s any chance we’ll get someone of his quality, but it would be nice if we could.

“I’ll keep going and hope we get some [new players].”
