West Ham United’s hopes of signing Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle have taken a blow as Italian heavyweights Roma have entered the race for the star’s signature according to The Daily Mail.
The former PSV Eindhoven ace was a rare bright spark for the St James’ Park outfit and ended the campaign as the Tyneside club’s top scorer in the Premier League.
With Newcastle being relegated to The Championship, a host of the club’s current players are expected to be offloaded as Rafa Benitez prepares for life in the second tier of English football.
Wijnaldum is reportedly a target for the Hammers, who want a versatile winger to provide Slaven Bilci with additional options in the final third next season.
The Netherlands international could well be on his way to the Italian capital however, with Roma also interested in rescuing the gifted playmaker from a campaign in The Championship and bringing him to feature in Serie A.
