Why we should go toe to toe with Liverpool in £5m swoop

Football FanCast columnist Greg
Symonds
feels that his beloved Aston Villa should go toe to
toe with Liverpool for Emile Heskey's signature.

As we
trudged back past Aston Hall on Saturday the talk was rife about our lack of
firepower upfront. There is no doubting on their day Agbonlahor and Carew are
better than anyone, but their inconsistency is a massive worry and something we
need to be addressed in January.

I think
half the problem is that they both have become complacent and who could blame
them. With the likes of Marlon Harewood in reserve there is nobody really
knocking at the door and giving them a run for their money for a first team
place. You would think the very fact they are wearing the Villa shirt and
earning great fortunes on a weekly basis would be enough to motivate them, but
on their viewing of the last few games I see otherwise.

It has
been reported in the newspapers today that apparently Roque Santa Cruz is
emerging as Martin's top target when the window opens. The Paraguayan is an
excellent centre forward as he proved last season, but will Blackburn honestly
let him go? I know a move to Villa would be tempting in the same way it was for
Brad Friedel, but I cannot see Paul Ince allowing yet another top name leave
the football club this season, especially given the likely struggles they will
be set to face in the coming months.

So who
should the Villa bring in? I'm sure I wasn't the only Villa fan who looked at
Jermain Defoe on Saturday and wondered what could have been had we moved a lot
quicker. For me he is everything that Agbonlahor could be if he just showed a
bit more discipline in his game and the very fact that Portsmouth has financial
troubles, means they may be tempted by a bid.

The other
name that I believe should be high on the priority list is Emile Heskey, a
player enjoying something of a renaissance and finally showing supporters what
the fuss is about him and why so many clubs have spent millions on him. Big,
strong and quick, I believe Heskey would be superb at Villa Park and an ideal
partner for Gabby or equally lethal with Carew. He is wonderful in the air and
will be a huge presence at set pieces for Ashley Young to hit and just
generally possesses all the attributes that fits in with our style of play.

Heskey
is available for transfer in January as Wigan have all but given up in trying
to get him to commit to a new contract and it is thought that a £5m bid will be
enough to tempt Dave Whelan to sell, given he can walk out for free at the end
of the season. The player has come out in the past week and more than hinted
that Liverpool would be his desired destination given the choice and it's
likely that the Merseysiders will make a move to sign him to bolster their striking
options, but I Just wonder if the Martin O'Neill factor can tempt the player,
who was given his break under the Irishman, to move to Villa Park and
strengthen our own pursuit of the Top four – I certainly hope he can, because
our attack could certainly use him.

So
should Villa make a move for the duo and would they be the ideal complement to
our squad? Will Defoe turn his back on Portsmouth for a chance at a bigger club
and will we be able to prize Heskey away from under the nose of Liverpool? The
latter seems the most likely and, in my opinion, O'Neill should do everything
he can to capture the deal.
