Wilkins: Terry will bounce back

Assistant manager Ray Wilkins is confident that John Terry will recover from his Everton "blip" when he returns to Chelsea action following a leave of absence.

The recently sacked England captain will miss the weekend FA Cup clash with Cardiff City after being granted leave to tend to the problems in his private life.

Wilkins confirmed the period of leave after Terry was given a torrid evening by Louis Saha during Wednesday's 2-1 defeat at Everton.

His 75th minute error allowed Saha to scored his and Toffees' second of the night as the Blues saw their lead over Manchester United at the top of the table cut to just one point.

"John got caught under the ball for the second one but that was probably thinking Saha might have been going over the top to win it," he explained.

"But John has been absolutely outstanding for us all season, so if it was a mistake from John I am sure it was just the slightest of blips."

Speaking about their fourth league defeat of the season – all away from home – Wilkins continued:"Normally when we go in front we are quite good at keeping hold of it but when you come to a place like Everton, their work-rate is such that they make it extremely difficult for you.

"They never lay down and they came back at us in a strong fashion.

"Looking back over the whole piece, they just about deserved to nick it.

"But full credit to our lads as well, towards the end we came back and had a really good go at them."
