Ashley Young was strongly linked with a move away from Manchester United in the January transfer window after struggling to win a spot in Jose Mourinho's team during the first half of the 2016-17 campaign.

Young's versatility and experience has been key for the Red Devils in 2017, however, with the Englishman operating at left-back, right-back and left wing-back for Mourinho in recent weeks.

The captain's armband was taken from Marouane Fellaini to Young for Sunday's Premier League clash with Chelsea, meanwhile, and the 31-year-old revealed his delight at being handed the chance to lead the team.

He told Man United's official website:

"I’ve had the captaincy midway through a game but to actually lead the team out was fantastic for me. The main thing was to get the result.

"We’ve got 11 leaders when we’re out there on the pitch, obviously the manager is on the side as well, and when we make changes we’ve got leaders all over the pitch.

"We have to stick together, times are hard, but you have to carry yourself in the right way, in the right manner. When you’ve got 11 leaders, it helps you all over the pitch.”

Young, who joined Man United from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011, has won the Premier League and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford, making more than 160 appearances for the 20-time English champions.

The 30-time England international is also expected to be involved when Man United welcome Anderlecht for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.
