Manchester United emerge as favourites to sign Dries Mertens

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may well be looking to bring in a new forward before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month, but while a deal for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic continues to stall, they have emerged as the favourites to sign Napoli’s Dries Mertens with online bookmakers BetVictor listing them as 3/1 to get the Belgian.

The Red Devils have been trying to bring Perisic to Old Trafford throughout the summer, but the Daily Mail reports that they have struggled to negotiate on Inter’s £48.5m valuation of the 28-year-old.

Mourinho could be forced to look elsewhere and they appear to be well-placed to bring Mertens to Old Trafford before August draws to a close, with their arch-rivals City listed at 4/1 despite the fact that the Belgium international only signed a new deal until 2020 earlier this summer.

The 30-year-old would certainly add something to the United team having scored 34 goals and provided a further 15 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A giants last term playing as a centre-forward, but he can also play on either flank as well.
