Clarke: I’d love Liverpool to win it, but Chelsea have a commanding lead

Golfing great Darren Clarke believes Chelsea, not his beloved Liverpool, will win the Premier League title this season.

Although the Northern Irishman admitted he’d love to tip the Reds for this season’s crown, he simply can’t see Chelsea missing out after gaining an eight-point lead at the division’s summit. Liverpool, meanwhile, are still chasing their first Premier League win of 2017 amid a worrying dip in form.

Clarke was speaking at the launch event for Icons of Football 2017, a unique event which sees two teams of twelve footballing greats pit themselves against each other in a Ryder-Cup-style tournament on 23rd-25th June at prestigious course The Belfry, home of some of the most iconic golfing moments in Ryder Cup history.

And coincidently enough, the competition will see Clarke – who is leading the Rest of the World Team – either captain or compete with some illustrious Liverpool names, not least including Anfield icons Steven Gerrard, Paul Ince and Robbie Fowler, former forward Patrik Berger and cult hero Dirk Kuyt – as well as currents Reds star James Milner. Some other notable names in Clarke’s team include Gabriel Batistuta, Ryan Giggs, Andriy Shevchenko and Alessandro Del Piero.

Darren Clarke’s counterpart will be PGA Tour Winner and former European Golfer of the Year, Lee Westwood, who captains an England Team featuring the likes of Alan Shearer, Michael Carrick and Teddy Sheringham.

The Icons of Football 2017 will play witness to some of the most iconic footballers on the planet face-off in events including fourballs, foursomes and pairs. There will also be a £1million Swing competition where each player, including the two captains, get one chance to hit a hole-in-one with the winner receiving a cash prize for their chosen charity.

In an added twist members of the public are encouraged to guess which icon will get a hole-in-one with one correct winner in with a chance to win thousands of pounds for themselves.
