While Manchester United broke all kinds of transfer records over the course of the summer, it’s clear their team isn’t yet balanced enough to realistically compete for the Premier League title. As important as the next summer transfer window is for Jose Mourinho in terms of who he brings into United, deciding who can leave is just as important.
Though the Red Devils are one of the richest clubs in the world, the size of their squad will invariably lead to exits during the next few months and perhaps the MLS would offer an interesting route. No longer is the American league looked upon as a place where ageing veterans go to see out the end of their careers and there are a number of big United players who could realistically make a move across the pond.
With Visit Britain running an exciting competition to bring the biggest Super Fan over to England, it’s time to take a look at the kind of players who could move in the opposite direction.
That being said, here are five Manchester United players who could move to the MLS this summer…
An Old Trafford legend, Michael Carrick’s presence in the United midfield has been a transformative one. The former England international has been instrumental in some of Paul Pobga’s best performances this season and has shown he still has the physical ability to perform to the highest level.
Still, recent reports suggest Mourinho is yet to offer him a new deal and perhaps a move to America would suit Carrick at this stage of his career, as United look towards further rebuilding.
Another former England international, Ashley Young also continues to force his way into Mourinho’s plans as a result of his sterling performances. Able to operate in both midfield and attack, the 31-year-old was linked with a move to the MLS during the winter window and, surely, will attract interest again.
The England captain’s powers may well be on the wane, though Wayne Rooney is undoubtedly still a draw. One of the most talked about footballers ever, the 31-year-old’s time at Old Trafford appears to be drawing to a close and there is bound to be interest from abroad in him.
Having seen former England teammates David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard move over the Atlantic in recent years, perhaps Rooney could be tempted to do the same.
Unfortunately for Romero, the Argentine has a certain David De Gea to contest with between the posts at Old Trafford. To be realistic, it would take an almighty dip in form to properly oust the Spaniard and the consistent nature of his form suggests that really won’t happen.
So, with that being said, Romero may be tempted to leave the Theatre of Dreams. A World Cup finalist and a regular Argentina international, the 30-year-old will surely have stateside suitors.
Amazingly enough, despite his talismanic form for the Red Devils this season, Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future is by no means certain. The superstar Swede is yet to commit next season and, as a result, has been linked with a move to America.
35 he may be, though Ibra is proving he can still operate amongst the elite and the former Barcelona man would be a marquee arrival in America. Perhaps the biggest since David Beckham.
