With Visit Britain running a competition to find the biggest Super Fan in the world, it’s easy to see why there is so much growing interest from across the pond in the Premier League.
Much like the NFL, England’s elite footballing division is packed to the rafters with glitz and glamour, with a number of larger-than-life characters strutting their stuff on a weekly basis.
Whenever the NFL bring their franchise over to Wembley, you’re always likely to see Premier League stars in attendance, a theme that will surely only grow when Tottenham Hotspur open their new stadium in a couple of seasons.
So, with the competition in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at the soccer stars we get to watch weekly who really wouldn’t look out of place on the gridiron.
So, with that in mind, here’s a look at five players who’d be fine in making the switch over the Atlantic.
An absolute powerhouse of a defender, Chelsea star Kurt Zouma’s imposing physical frame would surely stand him in good stead as a top NFL blocker. Not one to mess with, the Frenchman is a brick wall against speedy attackers on these shores, putting him in a good position to do it stateside.
West Ham United’s heading sensation Michail Antonio has all the attributes to make him a great wide receiver in the NFL. Gifted with searing pace, his journey up the leagues from the unfashionable depths of English football is an inspiring one and certainly taught him how to handle himself bombing up and down the flanks.
The Watford ‘keeper may have a clanger in him, though his impressive throwing ability to start attacks. While he’d take some beefing up to operate as a true quarterback, the fact the Brazilian can distribute the ball with so much distance would surely stand him in good stead.
Not having the best time of things at Manchester United right now, Wayne Rooney’s lethal ability to hit in a free-kick could be translated into becoming a kicker in the NFL. Pinpoint accuracy, the England captain has proved on numerous occasions he knows exactly where to shoot.
One of the fastest players in Europe, Manchester United’s bulking right-back Antonio Valencia would be an excellent linebacker. Able to run at ridiculous speed and power, there would be no stopping the South American in an offensive play.
