Ten-time Ryder Cup participant Lee Westwood believes Chelsea won’t be caught in this season’s Premier League title race.
The Blues have been in phenomenal form since Antonio Conte’s switch to a 3-4-3 formation, which has inspired their push to pole position in the table – a whopping eight points ahead of Arsenal in second.
Interestingly, Westwood initially felt the Gunners would take this season’s crown but now believes Chelsea’s healthy points cushion will be enough to see them over the line for a second top flight title in three years.
The 43-year-old was speaking at the launch event for Icons of Football 2017, which sees two teams of footballing icons do battle in a Ryder-Cup-style competition.
Westwood is the captain of the England team, which includes the likes of Michael Carrick, Andrew Cole, Robbie Fowler, Paul Ince, Phil Jagielka, James Milner, Paul Scholes, Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham.
His side will be taking on Darren Clarke’s Rest of the World roster at prestigious course The Belfry – home of some of the most iconic golfing moments in Ryder Cup history – from 23rd-25th June. Clarke’s side features some legendary football names in it with the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Ryan Giggs, Andriy Shevchenko, Gabriel Batistuta, Ronald De Boer and even Pep Guardiola likely to draw major interest from footballing and golfing fans alike.
The Icons of Football 2017 will play witness to some of the most iconic footballers on the planet face-off in events including fourballs, foursomes and pairs.
There will also be a £1million Swing competition where each player, including the two captains, get one chance to hit a hole-in-one with the winner receiving a cash prize for their chosen charity. In an added twist members of the public are encouraged to guess which icon will get a hole-in-one with one correct winner in with a chance to win thousands of pounds for themselves.
