Just like most of the teams in League Two’s current roster, Forest Green Rovers are definitely not among the biggest spenders out there. In fact, many of their most valuable signings as of late have indeed been free transfers.
But that is not necessarily a bad thing at all – the Green Devils have been scooping up players released by other clubs or players who failed or refused to sign extensions with their former outfits and that has been a good tactic for them in the transfer market.
Still, their most expensive purchase ever is still that of Adrian Randall who joined Forest Green Rovers at the end of the century for a reported fee of £25,000. As far as their free transfers and transfers for undisclosed fees go, the most valuable ones are those of Luke Jones from Mansfield Town back in 2010/11 and the most recent one – Matt Mills from Pune City in 2019/20.
The situation with departures is more clear if nothing else. Forest Green Rovers have a couple of lucrative deals on their books and none as big as Ethan Pinnock’s £513,000 departure to Barnsley FC.
He is then closely followed by Christian Doidge’s £252,000 move to Hibernian FC in 2019/20 while Stuart Fleetwood’s £90,000 exit to Charlton Athletic in 2009/10 rounds off the top three departures from the club.
It’s quite difficult to list the most famous transfers to ever go through at Forest Green Rovers since we don’t have the exact price tags to support those claims. Still, as far as expensive players who turned out to become legends go, rarely anyone can rival Randall and his arrival in 1999.
He ended up tallying over 100 games for the club as well, proving to be quite a good investment for the club as a whole. Jones might be the most valuable free player to arrive at Forest Green Rovers but he didn’t really stay for long, leaving a season after his arrival.
It also remains to be seen what the future holds for another big arrival, Mills, who is still at the club but doesn’t have a long-term contract penned just yet. Of course, we should also give a shout to the exits as well – Pinnock and Doidge made the cub quite a profit with their exits in 2017/18 and 2019/20 respectively and they remain their top two departures to date.
