There’s no denying that the biggest shock on the opening weekend of the 2017/18 Premier League season was Chelsea’s defeat to Burnley at Stamford Bridge.
The defending Champions were fully expected to make easy work of a side who managed just one win on the road last season, but found themselves going in to half-time trailing 3-0 to Sean Dyche’s men.
A second-half rally set up a nail-biting end thanks to goals from David Luiz and Alvaro Morata, but Burnley held out for all three points.
Chelsea’s defeat can be blamed on a number of things, not least the first half dismissal of captain Gary Cahill and then Cesc Fabregas’ idiocy leading to two yellow cards – leaving Antonio Conte’s men with just nine men on the field at the full-time whistle.
Cahill and Fabregas were two very popular picks for FPL managers heading in to GW1 but their red cards and Chelsea’s capitulation will have completely let down those who were relying on them to pick up some valuable early points.
Unsurprisingly, the pair’s suspension from the Blues’ upcoming fixtures have led to thousands of FPL managers around the world rushing to sell and replace them with more trusted personnel.
At the time of writing, 224k FPL managers have washed their hands of Gary Cahill while 138k have chosen to replace Cesc Fabregas with a more reliable alternative.
Some would say it’s worth keeping Fabregas in the squad as he’ll only miss one fixture, but the patience of these FPL managers is so ruthless it’s clear they’re unwilling to wait.
