Match Report: Hashtag United battle hard to record a huge 1-0 win over Halstead Town

In a game between the league’s top two sides, Hashtag United needed to win in order to maintain a comfortable position in the title race, and that’s exactly what they did.

Before kick-off, there was just a six-point gap between the two sides, although Halstead had a game in hand – if they had managed to beat us, the gap would’ve been just three points.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. A hard-fought contest in front of 833 fans – a national Step 6 record for the season – saw Hashtag extend their league at the top of the table to a huge nine points with only three points left; we can almost taste the title.

The match could’ve been a lot simpler after just seven minutes if Ross Gleed’s excellent finish into the top corner had stood, although it was questionably disallowed by the linesman for offside despite appearing to come off a Halstead player originally- still, a cracking strike nonetheless.

After 30 minutes had passed, set-piece specialist Tom Williams netted an excellent freekick to send us into the lead, easing the tension around the place and sending the Hashtag bench into raptures – it was a fantastic curled effort into the top-right corner.

Shortly after half-time, Halstead missed a glorious opportunity from inside the six-yard box – a let off for Hashtag.

The pressure continued to mount from Halstead, and a goal-bound effort looked to be the equaliser before Tom William’s pulled off a crucial goal-line clearance to protect the lead.

With just ten minutes left, Halstead kept coming, although their pressure was briefly stopped after ducks invaded the pitch!

Halstead very nearly got their equaliser in the 85th-minute, but for Jacko’s weekly wonder save to keep them out yet again – he continues to deliver for us game after game.

That save seemed to kill Halstead’s hopes of ever finding an equaliser, as they were thwarted time and time again thanks to some heroic defending from the Hashtag boys.

Eventually, the final whistle went, sparking scenes of celebration from everyone in yellow and blue, but mostly Albie Keith!

As previously mentioned, we are now nine points clear with just three games to go!

A fantastic effort from all the lads has got us to this position, and the battling win over Halstead just summed up the boys’ hard work and graft this season.
