Just a couple of years ago, the Terries were definitely not among the biggest spenders in English football. Prior to 2017/18, the record for the most expensive arrival ever was held by Christopher Schindler, who was transferred from TSV 1860 Munich in 2016/17 for £1.9m, surpassing Nahki Wells’ £1.6m move from Bradford. But then, everything suddenly changed and Huddersfield Town started splashing the cash, breaking records left and right.
Seasons 2017/18 and 2018/19 were incredible when it comes to multiple transfers coming in and even more importantly, expensive transfers. So much so that 14 players that moved to the club in those campaigns would take 14/15 top spots on the list of their most expensive players to date.
The newest record-holder at the moment is still Terence Kongolo who was bought in 2018/19 for £18m from Monaco, beating Steve Mounie’s move from Montpellier for a reported fee of £11.7m just a year prior to that. And there definitely seems to be a French connection at the club since the Terries went shopping over there in 2019/20 once again, this time coming back from Montpellier with Isaac Mbenza after paying £11.2m for him.
That was enough for the forward to become their third most expensive signing ever and the only player in the top 15 not to arrive in 2018/19 or 2017/18. Quite an achievement, that one, eh?
When it comes to departures, 2019/20 takes the cake this time as Philip Billing’s move to Bournemouth for a reported fee of £14.8m is the biggest sale the Terries have ever made, eclipsing the previous record-holder, Tom Ince, who was sold to Stoke City for £10m in 2018/19.
There have been some big names donning the colours of Huddersfield Town over the years, both in their older and more modern history. Marcus Stewart might be one to fall into the latter category and his record transfer for £1.2m ended up being a brilliant piece of business for the Terries.
And then we have players like Denis Law, who started his career at the club but his transfer away to Manchester City broke the old record when the Citizens splashed a total of £55,000 to land the coveted forward. Even though he would end up reaching for the stars at other clubs and his national side, Law remains as one of the most famous Terries.
Of course, players to be transferred in the modern age are mostly famous for the big price tags and Kongolo, Mounie and Mbenza could certainly be mentioned, as could young Billing with his move to Bournemouth.
