Everton face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their final match of a Premier League season on Sunday, and it could give manager Ronald Koeman the opportunity to take a closer look at some of his fringe players.

The Toffees are guaranteed a seventh-place finish and have already secured a spot in next season’s Europa League following a successful debut season in charge for Koeman, and the Dutchman could choose to make changes to his starting line-up for the visit to the capital.

Even though he is missing the likes of James McCarthy and Maarten Stekelenburg because of injury and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ademola Lookman are away with the England Under-20s, there are still a number of individuals that are pushing for a rare spot in the starting XI.

Some may be youngsters while others will be more experienced players hoping to prove that they have a future at Goodison Park.

Here are five Everton fringe players that deserve to start against Arsenal…

Mateusz Hewelt

With Maarten Stekelenburg missing through injury, the 20-year-old Polish goalkeeper was named on the substitutes’ bench for the visit of Watford to Goodison Park last Friday, and Koeman could be tempted to hand him his full Premier League debut at the Emirates.

With the Dutchman almost certain to bring in a new stopper during the summer having been heavily linked with Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford, Hewelt will likely find himself further down the pecking order next term and this could be the ideal opportunity to give him some more experience.

Gareth Barry

The 36-year-old midfielder has found first team opportunities hard to come by this season because of the form of Idrissa Gueye and the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, and he could choose to leave the Toffees this summer in order to gain more regular first team football.

Just six appearances short of breaking Ryan Giggs’ record of 632 Premier League appearances, Barry will be determined to get a start against Arsenal and Ronald Koeman will be keen to see if he still has something to offer ahead of what is sure to be a huge season next term.

Muhamed Besic

After suffering a number of injury problems over the course of the last two seasons, including an anterior cruciate ligament one at the start of the current campaign, the Bosnian has had little opportunity to show manager Ronald Koeman his ability on the pitch.

Having made his long-awaited return to training in March, the 24-year-old was named on the substitutes’ bench for the win against Watford earlier this month and he will be hoping he is given a chance to impress from the start for what is something of a dead rubber fixture for the Toffees at the Emirates.

Matthew Pennington

Following a number of injuries and suspensions, Pennington was handed his first start of the season by Ronald Koeman for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Anfield in April.

Incredibly, the 22-year-old also got on the scoresheet and he impressed in further outings against Manchester United at Old Trafford and then in the thrilling 4-2 win against Leicester City.

Even though Mason Holgate, Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams have been the regular starters in more recent times, Pennington will hope to be given another opportunity to make a positive impact against the Gunners.

Joe Williams

With the injuries building up for Koeman this season, the 20-year-old central midfielder has found himself named among the substitutes’ bench on four occasions – including against Watford last time out – although he is yet to make his Premier League debut for the Toffees.

Able to play in the middle, on the right or as more of an attack-minded midfielder, Williams is certainly versatile and having signed a new three-and-a-half year deal in February, he will hope that he can make his top flight bow by being named in the starting XI for the trip to the capital to face Arsene Wenger’s men.
