Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino could look to sell Moussa Sissoko this summer despite signing the midfielder for £30m less than a year ago.

The Argentine boss was keen to strengthen his side in attacking areas before the start of the current campaign in order to make sure they once again challenged for the Premier League title, and he brought the 27-year-old to north London on the final day of the summer transfer window.

However, the France international has failed to impress Pochettino or Spurs supporters during his 34 appearances in all competitions, and he only played the full 90 minutes on one occasion during the top flight campaign.

If the north London outfit do decide to try and recoup some of the cash they spent on the former Newcastle United man, there are a number of players they will already be looking at in order to try and improve on the Frenchman.

Here are five Sissoko replacements Tottenham should look to sign this summer…

Wilfried Zaha

Along with Sissoko, Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the Crystal Palace winger last summer and it appears as though they opted for the Frenchman after the Eagles refused to sell Zaha.

Even though the 24-year-old is said to be on the verge of signing a new deal at Selhurst Park following his most consistent Premier League campaign to date – he scored seven goals and provided a further 11 assists in 35 appearances – Sam Allardyce’s shock resignation on Tuesday could change things.

Pochettino is likely to still be a big fan of the Ivory Coast international, and he could return to try and tempt him with the offer of Champions League football.

Ryan Boudebouz

Following a successful season in France, it seems unlikely that Boudebouz will still be with Montpellier next season.

The Algeria international has attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Southampton after scoring 11 goals and providing a further nine assists in 33 Ligue 1 matches, and his ability to play wide or through the middle as an attacking midfielder mean that Pochettino could choose to take a punt on him this summer.

He would also likely be a cheaper alternative to some of their other targets if Sissoko leaves.

Emil Forsberg

Tottenham would certainly be pulling off a huge coup if they could persuade Forsberg to join them from RB Leipzig this summer.

The Bundesliga’s surprise package finished second behind Bayern Munich to secure a spot in the group stages of the Champions League next season, and the 25-year-old played a huge role in their impressive campaign.

The winger scored eight goals and provided a stunning 22 assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances this season, and he looks to have the potential to make a huge impact if he did link up with Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

North London rivals Arsenal have been linked with a £20m move for the Swede, but it could take more than that to prise him away from Germany.

The 21-year-old continues to attract admiring glances from a number of clubs following a string of impressive performances for Bayer Leverkusen, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp known to be a big fan of the wide man.

Having scored three goals and provided 11 assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances this season the Germany international, who can play on either wing, looks to have all of the attributes to be a success in the Premier League with Tottenham.

Whether he will move to England with the 2018 World Cup on the horizon remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that he would be an upgrade on Sissoko.

Dries Mertens

Tottenham’s transfer policy in recent seasons certainly hasn’t seen them target players who are 30 or over, but they may make an exception this summer.

The 30-year-old Napoli forward has enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Serie A giants – he has scored 33 goals and laid on 15 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions – and has the experience that Spurs perhaps lack in the Champions League.

Of course, Mertens will be well known to Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele with the trio playing alongside him for Belgium, and they could try and persuade him to make the move to north London.
