According to Sky Sports, Leeds United are set to exercise an option to extend manager Garry Monk’s contract for another year.

When the former Swansea City boss moved to Elland Road last summer, he signed a 12-month rolling contract and it looked to be a move that would pay off with the Yorkshire outfit looking set to finish in the play-off positions having spent the majority of the campaign there.

However, a poor run of form at the end of the season meant that Monk’s men narrowly missed out, and it looked to have put his future into doubt – especially with Andrea Radrizzani taking full control of the club from Massimo Cellino.

It now looks as though the 38-year-old is set to stay though, and he will have a number of issues to deal with this summer before hopefully embarking on another promotion push in the Championship next term.

Here are five priorities for Monk when he signs the new Leeds deal...

Convincing Wood to stay

Even though the New Zealand international has hinted that he is happy at Elland Road, his commitment could come into question this summer if Premier League clubs register their interest in the striker.

Having scored 30 goals in all competitions this season, The Sun has claimed that West Ham United, Southampton, Stoke City and Swansea City are all interested in the prolific marksman and he could easily have his head turned.

If that does happen, Monk will need to convince him that the club can compete for automatic promotion again next term so he stays for at least one more year.

Signing a new left-back

Leeds United defender Charlie Taylor had a transfer request rejected last summer following West Bromwich Albion despite entering the last year of his contract at Elland Road, but there was no solution to the situation.

Unwilling to sign a new deal, the 23-year-old spent the majority of the closing stages of the Championship campaign before refusing to play in the club’s final match of the season against Wigan Athletic.

Despite offering him a new two-year deal following the expiry of his contract in order to ensure they get a compensation fee, Taylor is expected to go and Monk will need to find a new left-back.

Covincing Jansson to stay

The Sweden international is already set to join the club on a permanent £3.5m deal this summer following a successful season-long oan spell from Torino, but it hasn’t stopped speculation over his future.

Jansson adapted so well to the Championship that some believe he is already ready to play in the Premier League, with Southampton among the clubs said to be interested, and Monk may need to persuade him to stay at Elland Road for at least another year.

The fact that he might not be playing alongside Kyle Bartley – with whom he formed such a strong partnership at the heart of the defence – could also have a bearing on his future.

Strengthening the squad

With Charlie Taylor almost certain to leave the club and Kyle Bartley, Matt Grimes, Modou Barrow, Alfonso Pedraza and Hadi Sacko all returning to their parent clubs following loan spells at Elland Road, Monk knows he will need to strengthen his squad this summer.

Leeds’ new majority owner Radrizzani will want the club to be aiming for automatic promotion next season, and Monk will tell him that he must make a number of new additions to ensure that they are challenging at the top end of the table.

Having formed such a strong partnership with Pontus Jansson at the heart of the Leeds defence, Monk will hope that he can persuade the player to return and for Swansea City to let the centre-back to leave on a permanent deal, but it might not be easy.

The 26-year-old was shipped out by previous Swans boss Francesco Guidolin, but now Paul Clement is in charge he could choose to take a closer look at Bartley during pre-season to see if he can be part of the squad in the Premier League next season.

That won’t be an ideal situation for Leeds, who may need to turn their attentions elsewhere in order to make sure they are prepared for the start of the new campaign.
