Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to get back to winning ways in order to hold on to their spot in the Championship play-off positions when they face Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday.

Despite marching into the top six earlier this term, the Owls have stuttered in recent weeks and now sit just one point above seventh-placed Fulham with eight matches of the campaign remaining.

If they do end up in the lottery of the play-offs at the end of the season, manager Carlos Carvalhal will hope that his side can go one better than they did last year, after they were beaten 1-0 by Hull City in the final at Wembley.

If they do make the Premier League, the Portuguese boss will know that he will have some major work to do to his squad in the summer to ensure that they have the tools needed to survive in the top flight.

Here are FIVE Wednesday players that would need to be replaced if they win promotion…

Ross Wallace

The 31-year-old midfielder’s contract at Hillsborough runs out this summer, and the club are surely waiting to see what division they are in before choosing whether to offer the winger a new deal or not.

If they stay in the Championship they may choose to, however, if the Owls are promoted then there probably wouldn’t be a future for the Scot in the Premier League.

While he has scored five goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for Wednesday this season, he would be nothing more than a bit-part player in the top flight if the club wants to survive.

Sam Winnall

The striker only moved to Wednesday from Barnsley during the January transfer window, but having scored just one goal in eleven appearances since, Carlos Carvalhal won’t have been too impressed and Winnall could find himself surplus to requirements if the Owls are promoted to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has struggled to hit the ground running at Hillsborough, and that doesn’t bode well for the top flight, where he would come up against an even better standard of defenders.

Glenn Loovens

He may be the club captain, but there is no room for sentiment in modern day football and Loovens would need to be replaced if the Owls win promotion to the Premier League.

The Dutch defender turns 34 in September, and it could prove to be a difficult step up for the centre-back, who has never played in the English top flight.

Instead, Carlos Carvalhal would need to prioritise finding a partner for the impressive Tom Lees, who has age on his side.

Morgan Fox

Like Sam Winnall, Fox only joined the Owls during the January transfer window from Charlton Athletic, but doubts remain over whether the left-back would be ready to make the step up to the Premier League at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old often came under criticism from Addicks fans for his performances, but the Welshman seems to have settled into life at Hillsborough well.

However, coming up against Premier League wingers is a different story altogether, and Carlos Carvalhal could look to bring in a more experienced player during the summer.

David Jones

Because of injuries to Kieran Lee and Sam Hutchinson, Jones has found himself as something of a regular in midfield for the Owls in recent weeks, but that is something that Carlos Carvalhal won’t want to be repeated if the club win promotion to the Premier League.

While the 32-year-old has done well in the middle of the park, he certainly hasn’t set the world alight and the Portuguese manager will want more quality and depth in what can be a vital position in the top flight.
