Five things you need to know about Alphonse Areola
Areola isn’t a small goalkeeper by any means at 6 foot 3 but would still be look down on by the 6 foot 6 Courtois. He made his PSG and professional debut in May 2013 as a substitute for Italian Salvatore Sirigu and then played the first 61 minutes of the season finale.
The Frenchman spent the three ensuing campaigns at three different clubs. He began his journey as an on-loan number one at RC Lens, where he was named Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year. He then played for Bastia in Ligue 1 before getting his first European experience with La Liga side Villarreal in the 2015-16 season.
He returned to Paris to provide cover for Trapp this season after Salvatore Sirigu was loaned to Sevilla. Areola made 27 appearances for the Spaniard this past season, including starting the Coupe de France final and all six of PSG’s Champions League group stage matches. The Frenchman conceded only 21 goals this season, with 13 shutouts.
