With Chelsea's backup goalkeeper Asmir Begovic on his way to Bournemouth, Antonio Conte must now set his sights on filling the spot behind Thibaut Courtois. The man to replace Begovic could well be PSG's Alphonse Areola, who is reportedly being eyed by Conte to serve as understudy to the towering Belgium international next season.

The 24-year old Parisian shot-stopper is a PSG youth product and made 15 appearances in Ligue 1 this season after spending the past three campaigns out on on loan. He's now heading into his 11th season with the former French champions and has two more years remaining on his current contract. The Frenchman could overtake Trapp should he decide to stay at the Parc de Princes, or fight to split time with Courtois in the Premier League.

Either way, Areola isn't exactly a household name in England, so here's five things you need to know about the reported Chelsea target.

ESTABLISHED PLAYER

Areola isn’t a small goalkeeper by any means at 6 foot 3 but would still be look down on by the 6 foot 6 Courtois. He made his PSG and professional debut in May 2013 as a substitute for Italian Salvatore Sirigu and then played the first 61 minutes of the season finale.

The Frenchman spent the three ensuing campaigns at three different clubs. He began his journey as an on-loan number one at RC Lens, where he was named Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year. He then played for Bastia in Ligue 1 before getting his first European experience with La Liga side Villarreal in the 2015-16 season.

He returned to Paris  to provide cover for Trapp this season after Salvatore Sirigu was loaned to Sevilla. Areola made 27 appearances for the Spaniard this past season, including starting the Coupe de France final and all six of PSG’s Champions League group stage matches. The Frenchman conceded only 21 goals this season, with 13 shutouts.

NATIONAL TEAM EXPERIENCE

The 24-year old has represented France at every youth level, making 61 total appearances across the under-16s to the under-21s, but is yet to gain his first senior cap.

The Frenchman has represented his country at four major youth tournaments and was the hero of France’s 2013 U-20 World Cup triumph, keeping a clean sheet and saving two spot kicks in the penalty shootout.

Areola received his first call-up to the senior squad in October 2015 while at Villarreal but did not make France’s Euro 2016 squad. He has been called up to France’s latest squad for matches against Paraguay, England and Sweden and is likely to make his senior debut against the South Americans.

PRAISE FROM ONE OF THE BEST

Goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon had nothing but praise for the Frenchman last year. Buffon said Areola “is physically imposing and assured with a big presence. He will become an important goalkeeper.” Not bad from one of the best goalkeepers of all-time.

Areola revealed to goal Goal that his goalkeeping idols are Edwin van der Saar and Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas — whose shirt was the first Areola ever owned.

GOALKEEPING STYLE

Areola is an aggressive 'keeper who is not afraid to put his body on the line, diving every which way to protect his net. One of his few flaws is that he appears to prefer to parry rather than catch but his strength often pushes rebounds a great distance. Thus far in his in-game career, Areola has saved four of 19 penalties, including Cosmin Moti’s penalty with PSG up 2-1 against Ludogorets Razgrad in this season’s Champions League.

COURTOIS INSURANCE

The French youth international is also eligible to represent the Philippines through his parents and was asked by then-manager Dan Palami to consider representing the island nation in 2011, which Areola clearly declined.

If Antonio Conte can convince Areola to join the Premier League champions, the Italian would have a great insurance plan should Thibaut Courtois be whisked away in the coming summers.
