West Ham United will look to bring an end to the three successive defeats they have started the Premier League season with when they return to the London Stadium to host newly-promoted Huddersfield Town on Monday night.

The Irons were forced to play their opening three fixtures away because the 2017 World Athletics Championships were taking place at their home this summer, and it has proven to be a disastrous beginning following 4-0, 3-2 and 3-0 losses against Manchester United, Southampton and Newcastle United respectively.

The results have placed manager Slaven Bilic under huge pressure even at this early stage of the campaign, especially after the club brought in the likes of Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez during the course of the summer transfer window.

The 3-0 defeat to the Magpies last time out was particularly poor, and Bilic may well decide to make wholesale alterations for the visit of the Terriers, who are unbeaten and are yet to concede a goal.

Here are four changes Bilic must make to beat Huddersfield and keep his job…

Play a 3-4-1-2 formation

So far this season Bilic has opted to use the 4-2-3-1 formation, but he may consider changing it for the visit of Huddersfield Town in order to get the positive result he desperately needs.

West Ham often played with a three-man defence towards the end of last season and the Croatian manager may feel that incorporating that again could help tighten up a leaky backline that has conceded 10 times in the opening three Premier League matches of the season.

Play Kouyate and Obiang in central midfield

Whether Bilic decides to go three at the back or not, he should bring Cheikhou Kouyate and Pedro Obiang into the two central midfield spots after the duo started the Newcastle defeat on the substitutes’ bench - with Declan Rice and Mark Noble preferred in the starting line-up.

While it may seem like a negative move at home against a newly-promoted side, the defensively-minded duo would bring some strength and protection to a vulnerable backline that will come up against a confident Huddersfield attack.

They will also be able to cover for the wing-backs should they push forward against the Terriers, meaning the Irons will be much more difficult to break down than they have been so far this season.

Drop Noble and play Antonio in the centre

He may be West Ham captain but Mark Noble is just not performing as well as he can right now – this is also following on from last season – and he needs to be dropped to the substitutes’ bench for the visit of Huddersfield.

If Bilic was to play a 3-4-1-2 formation, he would be able to sit Kouyate and Obiang in the middle of the park and with Manuel Lanzini missing out through injury, the Croatian should consider giving Michail Antonio a free role behind the two strikers.

The 27-year-old doesn’t suit the wing-back role because of the defensive responsibilities he has, but he has shown how effective his finishing can be when he arrives late into the penalty box.

Play Carroll and Hernandez up top

Aside from perhaps the second half against Southampton, West Ham have offered little from an attacking point of view so far this season and it needs to change.

While Javier Hernandez showed just how good he can be with a brace at St Mary’s, he has often lacked support on other occasions and Bilic could solve that issue by playing the returning Andy Carroll up top alongside the Mexican.

The Huddersfield backline will come into this clash full of confidence because they are yet to concede a goal, but they would certainly know they have a game on their hands with the aerial threat of Carroll, whose strength and presence could draw defenders closer to him and provide Hernandez with more space as a result.
