Don’t talk to West Ham supporters about right-backs. For years now, they have tried to find a long-term option to make the position their own, but time and time again it doesn’t seem to work out.

The likes of Carl Jenkinson, Alvaro Arbeloa and Sam Byram have had a go in recent seasons, but none have cemented their spot in the starting XI.

Instead, Michail Antonio, who’s preferred position is certainly further up the pitch on the wing, has often filled in at right-back this season, putting in some impressive performances.

However, on occasion, he has been found out defensively – which is no surprise – but his absence from the clash against Premier League leaders Chelsea on Monday night would have brought a sense of dread to Irons fans.

Cheikhou Kouyate was the man to deputise at the London Stadium, but he endured a difficult evening against Eden Hazard, and enough is enough for supporters.

Here are FOUR right-backs that could solve the Hammers’ big problem this summer…

Kieran Trippier

When he made the move from Burnley to Tottenham in 2015, Trippier would have had high hopes that he could seriously challenge Kyle Walker for the right-back slot at White Hart Lane.

However, Walker has stepped up his performances under Mauricio Pochettino and is considered by many to be the best in the Premier League in his position right now.

That isn’t ideal for Trippier, though, and the 26-year-old has made just eleven appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, and he may look for regular first team football elsewhere in the summer.

Almamy Toure

Had it not been for the fine form of Djibril Sidibe, there is no doubt that Toure would have been Monaco’s first choice right-back this season.

However, the impressive 20-year-old has instead had to settle for a bit-part role for the Ligue 1 leaders, though he has still made 18 appearances in all competitions.

He has shown his attacking ability too by providing five assists, and that is a quality that Slaven Bilic will be looking for in a full-back, and the offer of regular first team football could be enough to persuade the youngster to move to the Premier League.

Dominic Iorfa

Following the success that Aaron Cresswell has had since he joined the Irons from Championship outfit Ipswich Town in 2014, West Ham scouts are sure to be keeping a close eye on the potential talent in England’s second tier.

If so, one of the players that will surely have caught their attention is Wolves right-back Iorfa.

Despite being just 21, he is already closing in on his 100th appearance for the west Midlands club.

Being strong and quick, he has all the ingredients to go on and be one of the best full-backs in the country.

Lukas Klostermann

Red Bull Leipzig’s rise to second in the Bundesliga table has been one of the main talking points in European football this season, with a number of young stars helping them challenge for Champions League football.

Klostermann would have been one of them, had he not suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in September that is still keeping him on the sidelines now.

However, the 20-year-old has shown what a good defender he can be and standing at 6ft. 2” tall, he also has the height to win aerial duels too.
