According to reports in the Daily Star at the weekend, West Ham United are interested in making a move for Swansea City attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Welsh outfit are understood to have placed a £30m price tag on the head of their star man, who has once again enjoyed a brilliant season at the Liberty Stadium despite the fact that the club has been battling at the wrong end of the table.

The Swans are just three points above the bottom three as it stands, and obviously their hopes of keeping the 27-year-old could depend heavily on whether they avoid relegation at the end of the campaign.

However, the Iceland international would have caught the attentions of other clubs anyway because of his impressive tally of goals and assists this term, and those potential suitors may feel that the asking price is one that would be good value for money.

Here are four reasons why West Ham must spend the £30m it would take to get Sigurdsson this summer…

Goals from midfield

In 28 Premier League appearances this season, Sigurdsson has scored an impressive eight goals – not bad for a player that either players as an attacking midfielder, behind the striker or as a false nine.

West Ham have suffered from a lack of goals this term, and they lost their scoring threat from outside the penalty area when Dimitri Payet rejoined Marseille during the January transfer window.

However, the Iceland international has shown time and time again that he is dangerous from range and there is no doubt that he would certainly be a decent replacement for the Frenchman – and one with a better attitude too!

Number of assists

Along with his impressive goal tally, the 27-year-old has also shown that he has the consistent quality to set his teammates up too.

With 11 assists to his name this term – the highest in the Premier League – as well as 46 key passes, the Icelandic midfielder has the ability on the ball and the general awareness around him to be a star at whichever club he is appearing for.

Those numbers for a side struggling at the wrong end of the table is remarkable, and you dread to think where Swansea would be without him.

Set piece ability

Many of Sigurdsson’s assists this season have come from free-kicks and corners, and it is his expert delivery that has often yielded goals for his teammates.

Having a tall striker like Fernando Llorente up top – who is keen to attack the ball – certainly helps, and if the 27-year-old did end up moving to the London Stadium this summer, there is no doubt that he could provide the quality that the Hammers attackers have been missing since Payet left for Marseille during the January transfer window.

He's in his prime

At 27 years of age, Sigurdsson is in his prime and his performances and leadership on the pitch for Swansea this season are showing that.

With all due respect to the Welsh side, he could be doing it for a team at a higher level and there is no doubt that a move to West Ham this summer would be a step up, but would also allow him to continue playing regular first team football.
