Now the fixture list for the closing stages of the season has been announced, Rangers know exactly what they must do if they are to overcome Aberdeen and finish an unlikely second in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Currently nine points behind with just six games remaining, you may think the task is impossible. However, it's actually more feasible than you think, especially if Pedro Caixinha can carry forward momentum from their big win over the Dons last Sunday.

Given the unpredictable nature of the top six fixtures, where the best sides in the country go to battle one last time, anything can happen between now and the end of the season.

There are three fixtures in particular that stick out. Win these and Rangers will have given themselves a massive chance to overhaul Derek McInnes' side, assuming they take care of comparatively easy games against Partick Thistle and Hearts.

This is Rangers' path to second place...

Do the unthinkable vs Celtic

If any team is to beat Celtic this season, it'd have a touch of destiny about it if Rangers were the ones to do it. Long and storied rivalry aside, the Gers have made incremental progress against the Hoops this season in a way other teams haven't.

First they were thumped 5-1, then they were edged out 1-0, they finally went ahead in the fixture on Hogmanay before eventually losing 2-1 and then finally got a draw out of them at Celtic Park.

Is the next step victory? Most Rangers fans would take that victory at Hampden in the Scottish Cup semi-final but just a week later the two sides will go toe-to-toe again at Ibrox in league action.

It's simply a must-win game for the Gers if they're to get close to Aberdeen. You wouldn't fancy the Dons getting much off the champions so if Rangers can do it then it's a massive benefit.

The only question is, can they beat the 'unbeatables'?

Pile the pressure on vs Aberdeen

By the time Aberdeen visit Ibrox on Wednesday 17th May, things could be very tight indeed between the two sides. That is if Rangers keep winning of course.

In the two games prior to this one, Derek McInnes' side will have had to travel to Hearts and host Celtic, two matches that you can easily see them dropping points in or even losing.

That means they could be arriving at the home of Rangers with the risk of their current 9 point advantage being obliterated.

Rangers have of course already beaten the Dons at home this season and after their 3-0 exploits at Pittodrie last week will go into a mid-week clash under the lights as hot favourites to do so again.

That could make the final day a massive one.

Finish the job vs St Johnstone

Both Aberdeen and Rangers play away on the final day although the Dons have the easier trip, heading to Glasgow to face Partick Thistle. As good as Thistle have been this season, Rangers' visit to McDiarmid Park is a much tougher ask, especially if the pressure is on to pick up a victory, assuming the race for second is still alive.

Rangers have beaten Saints this season, most impressively at Ibrox despite being down to ten men, but didn't manager to pick up all three points in Perth earlier in the season.

In a match that could well end up being one of the biggest of their entire league campaign, finding victory against Tommy Wright's side won't be easy. However, if they've managed to beat Celtic and beat Aberdeen then it's a match that could just salvage a positive perception of their season.
