Tottenham Hotspur play host to Borussia Dortmund in their opening Champions League Group H match at Wembley on Wednesday night, and Mauricio Pochettino may well be thinking about utilising his squad for the visit of the Bundesliga giants.

Spurs pulled off an impressive 3-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park at the weekend, with striker Harry Kane scoring his first goals of the season and Christian Eriksen also finding the net.

It was an important win for the north London outfit after they took just one point from their first two Premier League fixtures against Chelsea and Burnley at their temporary home, and they have now won just twice and lost eight times in 11 appearances at the national stadium since it was rebuilt.

Pochettino will be aware that their record needs to improve if they are to advance to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite club competition this term, and he may well consider making changes to the formation and personnel that started on Merseyside on Saturday as a result, with injuries and suspensions to deal with too.

Here are three changes Tottenham should make for the clash against Dortmund…

Son Heung-Min for Dele Alli

Pochettino changed the 4-2-3-1 formation he had deployed in the opening three Premier League matches of the season to a 3-5-2 system in the win against Everton, but it remains to be seen whether he will stick to that for the visit of Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

With Dele Alli set to serve the first of a three-match suspension for the dangerous tackle he committed in the defeat to Gent back in February, and Spurs clearly struggling to get results at Wembley, the Argentine boss could revert back to the 4-2-3-1 formation.

Son Heung-Min is the man most likely to replace the England international in the starting line-up, and he could start on the left-hand side of the three behind Harry Kane with Christian Eriksen shifting to the centre in Alli’s absence.

Serge Aurier for Davinson Sanchez

While Sanchez was an impressive performer on his full debut against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, he is the centre-back most likely to be sacrificed if Pochettino does decide to revert to four at the back.

The Argentine boss will most likely want the experienced duo of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen to deal with the threat that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who has scored six goals in five appearances in all competitions this season – is set to bring.

It could mean that there is a Spurs bow for Serge Aurier, who has plenty of Champions League experience from his time with Paris Saint-Germain, and Pochettino could even choose to play both Trippier and the Ivory Coast international on the right-hand side in order to ensure that they have enough quality at both ends of the pitch.

Mousa Dembele for Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko was given the nod ahead of Dembele in the middle of the park for the Premier League clash against Everton on Saturday, but you can only feel that Pochettino had one eye on the meet with Borussia Dortmund when he made that decision considering the France international has been relatively out of favour since joining Spurs last summer.

With Victor Wanyama already missing the Argentine boss wouldn’t have wanted to risk losing another central midfielder to injury, and it seems almost certain that the Belgian will replace Sissoko to provide some more defensive stability against the Bundesliga giants at Wembley on Wednesday night – especially as the former Newcastle United man also picked up a knock at Goodison Park.
