Everton bounced back from a disappointing run of form with a 3-0 win against Sunderland in the third round of the EFL Cup at Goodison Park on Wednesday, but it wasn't a positive night for all of their players.

The Toffees came into the clash against the Championship strugglers having lost their last four matches in all competitions – scoring none and conceding 12 in the process – and manager Ronald Koeman was starting to feel the heat.

The Dutchman made eight changes to the team that was beaten 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, with a number of younger players and experienced pros brought back into the starting line-up as he looks to provide more competition for places.

A brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a goal from Oumar Niasse on his first appearance for the club since the 2015/16 campaign wrapped up a comfortable win for the hosts, but some of the players won't have pleased Koeman with their performances.

Here are three Everton stars that failed to take their chance to impress against Sunderland…

Mo Besic

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international is probably behind the likes of Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin in the midfield pecking order right now, but with the latter in particularly bad form right now he had a real chance to stake his claim for a spot in the starting line-up against Bournemouth this weekend.

However, while the 25-year-old impressed by continually wanting the ball in midfield, the way he gave it away on a number of occasions was far less impressive and the really poor hospital pass aimed towards Michael Keane summed his night up.

Davy Klaassen

Having cost £23.6m when he signed from Ajax this summer, and with 20 goals and 12 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions for the Dutch giants last season, Everton fans would have had high hopes for the impact the 24-year-old could make for the Toffees this term.

However, the Netherlands international appears to be struggling to adapt to the rigours of English football right now and he endured another disappointing night against Sunderland.

The match against a struggling Championship side seemed to be the ideal one for him to take control of and dominate, but aside from a neat header to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first half he was largely anonymous throughout.

Sandro Ramirez

Like Klaassen, the forward arrived at Goodison Park this summer following an outstanding season with his previous club Malaga, where he scored 16 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

However, he also appears to be struggling to adapt to English football right now and has failed to score in his opening eight appearances for the Merseyside outfit.

While he did pick up an assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second goal, the 22-year-old will feel that this was the perfect opportunity to show that he should be the first-choice striker.

He failed to do that though, and he needs to contribute more on the pitch in the coming weeks if he wants to be picked by Ronald Koeman.
