Everton have been dealt a huge blow in their attempts to sign Swansea City attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer after the Iceland international said he isn’t “trying to leave” the Welsh side.

The Toffees have been strongly linked with a move for the 27-year-old, who has enjoyed another impressive campaign at the Liberty Stadium despite the club spending the majority of the campaign in and around the relegation zone.

With doubts over the long-term future of Ross Barkley – who is still yet to sign a new contract and could be sold this summer as a result – Ronald Koeman is keen to bring Sigurdsson to Goodison Park, but he may have to rethink his options following the star’s latest comments.

The Dutchman will know that there are plenty of other good options on the market, and it is down to him to select the best of those.

Here are three Sigurdsson alternatives Everton should look to sign this summer…

Davy Klaassen

One of the reasons Koeman would have been keen on Sigurdsson would have been his record this season – he has scored nine goals and provided a further 13 assists in the Premier League – but Klaassen has been similarly impressive for Ajax this term.

The 24-year-old has netted 20 goals and created 12 for his teammates in 49 appearances in all competitions on the way to helping the Dutch outfit reach the Europa League final, and if he could have a similar impact in England he would be a brilliant addition.

Tom Cairney

The 26-year-old playmaker arguably established himself as the best player in the Championship this season, and after Fulham lost to Reading in the play-offs he could be targeted by a number of Premier League clubs this summer.

Having scored 13 goals and provided a further 11 assists in 47 appearances the Scotland international was a huge influence on the Cottagers and his form one of the main reasons they ended the campaign in the top six.

He would be determined to take that form into the top flight if he secured a move, and Everton could reap the benefits.

Ronald Koeman knows all about the Southampton star having brought him to England in 2014, and he could be tempted to make a move for the Serbian this summer if a move for Sigurdsson fails to materialise.

Only two players have assisted more goals in the Premier League since he arrived at St Mary’s – he got 13 last season – and if Koeman is looking for a creative player, he knows what to do.

The 27-year-old has brought his future into question this season and he could be ready to leave the south coast outfit this term.
