Despite a squeaked victory over Middlesbrough at the weekend, Crystal Palace are a team in real trouble. Unable to score goals on a regular basis and with a defence that has not been reinforced in typical Sam Allardyce fashion, the London club are teetering on the brink of Premier League relegation.

A strong start to the 2015/16 campaign under Alan Pardew seems a very long time ago now. Going into freefall in the second half of that season and a woeful start to this campaign has left Palace in the heart of one of the most hotly contested relegation battles in recent memory.

The mystique of Allardyce as the Premier League’s best disaster prevention manager has been ruined. His ill-fated spell at England manager may have played a part, but it has been evident in Palace’s performances since his appointment.

Some at Selhurst Park must finally be regretting their decision to appoint Allardyce, particularly with the situation they were in under Pardew. It's not too late to make another change, of course...

Although he lacks Premier League experience, Gary Rowett has proven himself in his short managerial career to date. It may be a bit reductive, but Birmingham’s decline since Rowett was relieved of his duties in December is a testament to the good work he did at the club.

Rowett took Birmingham from the perils of the bottom of the table to a genuine playoff contender. It shocked many when he left the job in England’s second city and it seems as though a Premier League job will be his in a matter of time.

Garry Monk

With Premier League experience and an ever-improving record with Leeds United, Garry Monk is destined for a return to the top flight.

Whether by bringing Leeds back to the pinnacle of the English game or through moving jobs, the ex-Swansea City manager should be a target for Crystal Palace either right now or at the end of the season.

Harshly treated in South Wales, Monk boasts a 53% win percentage with the Yorkshire giants and has taken them into fourth in the Championship.

He might not bring the blood and guts approach of Allardyce, but Monk will get Palace flowing in attack.

David Wagner

With Huddersfield threatening automatic promotion from the Championship, luring David Wagner to struggling Crystal Palace could be a challenge in itself.

The wonders he has worked with Huddersfield prove his credentials as a manager, though, and he would be an appointment that could have long-term positive implications for the Eagles.

His ability to form a bond amongst the Huddersfield squad has proven his management skills. In the midst of a relegation battle these are exactly the talents that Palace need right now.

Allardyce was once the man to reinvigorate a floundering side, but Wagner is a modern alternative that Palace should probably have targeted when they sacked Alan Pardew.
