Rangers' transfer activity in the summer window was greater in sum than any other team in the country, even Celtic. The Light Blues went above and beyond with their spending in an effort to try and close the gap on their city rivals and potentially challenge for the Scottish Premiership.

Just a couple of month sinto the new season though and that title challenge looks as distant as ever with inconsistent results and performances littering their league form.

Perhaps expectations of title wins were also too high, perhaps they just didn't sign the right players. Regardless, January presents another opportunity to get recruitment right, especially as now they have a director of football firmly in place, which wasn't the case prior to their big summer splurge.

So who can give them this mid-season boost? Here are THREE achievable signings that could transform the look of the Light Blues starting eleven...

Jamie Walker

Jamie Walker to Rangers was one of the biggest reported transfer sagas of the entire summer and with less than a year left on his contract at Tynecastle, it seems certain he will leave Hearts regardless of his destination.

That's thrown his form in the early part of the season way off. In his first nine matches he's failed to contribute to a single goal for the Edinburgh side, whether through one of his own or an assist. That's a far cry from last season when he netted 15 times and contributed seven assists in all competitions.

His record in 2016/17 is still what makes him an outstanding January buy for Rangers. He's shown what he can be capable of in the Scottish top-flight and although he's struggled to find that confidence this term, a big move to Ibrox would almost certainly re-invigorate him and provide a huge boost to the Light Blues squad at a decent price.

John McGinn

John McGinn may have a family history that runs through the fabric of Celtic and he may have had a season ticket at Celtic Park for 15 years, but he would still be an exceptional buy for Rangers. Footballers often go against their boyhood allegiances when they become professionals and McGinn would be no different, he did just score a superb double against the Scottish champions after all.

He is one of the best Scottish prospects around right now, certainly in that central midfield position and for St Mirren and Hibernian has shown great consistency and growth. Now 22, the time is right for him to make a big move from Easter Road and Rangers should put themselves at the front of the queue.

In 2007, they missed out on Scott Brown and time has shown what a mistake that was. This time around they should show the ambition and investment in McGinn's career.

His dynamic display at Celtic Park last week demonstrated why Gordon Strachan has been picking him for Scotland squads for over a year now and why landing the midfielder would be such a coup for the Ibrox side.

It's a difficult, complicated deal with rivals Hibs, but if it can be done, it's a no-brainer.

Louis Moult

Louis Moult is another of last season's top performers that surprised everyone by staying on in the Scottish Premiership this season. The smart opinion was that he'd be moving on from Motherwell in the transfer window, but he has shown loyalty to the Steelmen and looks as good as he as ever done in the Scottish Premiership.

Having scored 18 goals in each of the previous two seasons, he's now netted a fantastic nine goals in his first 13 matches this term, also contributed three assists.

It's outstanding form, the best of any player outside of Celtic and Rangers perhaps, and shows that he still remains one of the best options available at a decent price to Rangers.

They may have Alfredo Morelos, but adding the firepower of Moult would enhance that even further and could make the Ibrox attack unstoppable.
