As reported by the BBC, Rangers continue to pursue Scotland international and Norwich City midfielder Graham Dorrans for a potential summer move to Glasgow. According to the report they've now bid twice for his services and have been knocked back both times.

As much as they want him, the realities of their limited resources in the transfer market means that they could ultimately fail in their attempts to bring the 30-year-old back to Scottish football.

Still, the position remains a priority with the Light Blues badly needing improved quality in the middle of the park after a disappointing season in the Scottish Premiership.

With that in mind, we've put together a list of THREE back-up options that could fit the bill at Ibrox should their advances for Dorrans continue to be rejected by Norwich City...

Graeme Shinnie

The versatile Graeme Shinnie began his career at Inverness Caledonian Thistle as a left-back but he has increasingly been utilised as an effective midfielder at Aberdeen under Derek McInnes. Indeed, many have tipped him to feature for Scotland in the position despite him having never won a cap.

After signing Ryan Jack on a free transfer Shinnie would fit in well at Ibrox working with his former teammate and his signing would represent another significant blow to the team that finished above the Light Blues last term.

Still, it could prove a tempting move for him, especially as speculation continues to mount that manager Derek McInnes could become the new Sunderland boss.

Aberdeen are coming to the end of an era and staying on too long could ultimately harm the career of the impressive Shinnie, who captained the Dons in the Scottish Cup Final.

With Lee Wallace also badly needing competition then killing two birds with one stone with his signing could be a very viable option if Pedro Caixinha fails to get Shinnie.

Josh Onomah

After impressing for the England U20s team that won the World Cup, Josh Onomah is likely to have plenty of clubs chasing him this summer for a prospective loan move from Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite his tender age he's already made 32 appearances for Spurs, including 12 last season. However, he needs a regular game week-to-week and given the strength and ambition of Mauricio Pochettino's outfit, that may not be possible next term.

With the likes of Celtic and Brighton reportedly looking to land him on loan, Rangers should throw their hat into the ring too. He clearly has talent and would undoubtedly improve their midfield.

Perhaps what the Light Blues can offer most is the promise of regular football. Even at Celtic competition is high for midfield positions that Onomah wouldn't be guaranteed to have.

Rangers can almost guarantee a starting berth and with UEFA Europa League qualifiers to come, he could even gain vital experience in continental competition.

Kevin McDonald

Once tipped as a regular Scotland international, McDonald has never really quite lived up to the potential many thought he had when he burst onto the scene at Dundee 10 years ago. However he has had a good career in the English lower leagues, making around 300 appearances in the Championship and League One for the likes of Sheffield United and Burnley.

Now 28 years old, he’s been a key part of Fulham’s midfield this season, making 45 appearances on their way to the promotion play-offs before eventually being dumped out by Reading.

An undoubted upgrade on what Rangers currently have, he was linked with a move to Ibrox at the start of the month.
