After Everton defender Seamus Coleman suffered a double leg break while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland last month, Toffees manager Ronald Koeman could be looking to sign a new right-back to cover his absence this summer.
The 28-year-old is likely to be out of action for at least the rest of 2017 and with Mason Holgate being the only natural option available to Koeman at the moment, the Dutchman is already likely to be identifying possible targets as he looks to strengthen the right side of his back four.
While it is always said that there are bargains to be had abroad, the Merseyside outfit could choose to bring in a player with Premier League experience instead as they look to push on and secure a Champions League spot next term, and there are certainly plenty of potential options in the top flight.
Here are three right-backs Everton could sign to cover the Irishman…
Kieran Trippier
According to reports in The Sun, Koeman has already identified the Tottenham Hotspur right-back as a potential £12m buy this summer.
It would certainly be a move that would work for both parties too, with Trippier able to get the first team football that he has failed to get at White Hart Lane this season – he has made just 14 appearances in all competitions this season – and Everton getting a player that is proven at this level.
Cuco Martina
Koeman brought the Curacao captain to Southampton in the summer of 2015, and he could look to sign the 27-year-old for Everton at the end of the season, too.
Martina has fallen out of favour under Claude Puel in recent months and with his Saints contract due to expire this summer – and with no new deal on the table – he looks set to move on from the south coast.
If Koeman is looking for a player to cover Coleman’s injury before the Republic of Ireland international returns, then he could do a lot worse than sign Martina on a free.
Calum Chambers
According to reports in The Mirror, Everton are among the clubs targeting a summer move for the versatile Arsenal player.
Chambers has impressed during a season-long loan spell at Middlesbrough this term and the fact that he can play at right-back and centre-back makes him an attractive proposition for managers.
This would especially be the case for Koeman, where Chambers would be able to cover Coleman until he returns to action, before reverting to his more natural spot at the heart of the defence.
