As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha wants the situation regarding Barrie McKay's future at Ibrox sorted by next week.

McKay's deal at the club expires next summer and given he is a young, bright talent with transfer value, if he doesn't commit to Rangers then they may be left with no option than to cash in on him while they can.

The 22 year old winger has shown exceptional ability at points this season but across the piece has been inconsistent with his performances. Still, he is one of the brightest prospects at Ibrox and fans will hope that he can realise his potential in Light Blue and not elsewhere.

It's a tricky situation and ultimately, should the player decide his future lies elsewhere then he could be off very shortly. For us though, we reckon he should stay in Glasgow for a while longer.

Here are three reasons why...

No substitute for first team football

McKay made his debut in 2011 when he was just 17 years of age but most of his first team experience has come in the lower leagues of Scottish football. This is in fact his first full season in the Scottish top-flight and that may be the key reason he's shown inconsistency this season.

The first team experience he can still gain at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership could be vital to his development at a key stage of his career. Move to another club too early and he may find himself unable to break into a team and that could ruin it all.

Committing to Rangers and giving Pedro Caixinha the confidence to invest time and effort into his development would appear to be a smart move right now. He's still young and there's plenty of time in the future to find a big move away from the club.

Right now he needs to focus on improving his game.

Rangers can only improve... surely?

Of course, it's often not easy to improve as an individual when the club feels like it is in a constant state of crisis. To say this season has been a frustrating one for the club and supporters would be an understatement.

The feeling surrounding the club is not great but you know what that means - things can only get better. Next season should see an upturn in fortunes of the team, in results, league placings, quality of the team, everything.

Should Pedro Caixinha execute on his plans then next season could be one of Barrie McKay's most enjoyable yet in a Light Blue shirt. After making the journey from Scottish League 2 to the Premiership, surely he should allow himself to enjoy the fruits of that hard work?

Celtic are having a freak season, Rangers are having one of their worst. If he sticks around, he could find that Ibrox isn't such a bad place to play football.

Fans at Ibrox treat their heroes kindly

The fact is, if you show a bit of loyalty to Rangers, they return the favour in spades. If Barrie McKay calls an early end to his Rangers career then he's turning his back on what could be a lifelong relationship with one of the most passionate supporters in world football.

I doubt Gers fans are expecting him to commit his entire career to the club, but signing another deal and spending another year or two at the club and allowing them to cash in on his development would go down well with supporters who would no doubt wish him the best.

That would be especially true if he applies himself next season and finds the consistency to be a top player in the Scottish Premiership on a weekly basis.
