According to reports in The Mirror, Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal is being eyed by Championship rivals Norwich City as the Canaries continue their search for a permanent successor to Alex Neil.

For the second successive season the Owls finished in the top six under the Portuguese boss but on both occasions they have failed to secure the promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2000 that they so desperately want.

The Yorkshire outfit were beaten on penalties in the play-off semi-final by local rivals Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night to ensure they will spend another year at this level, but it hasn’t prevented interest in the 51-year-old from other clubs including Norwich and Porto.

Despite their successes over the course of the last two campaigns, some may feel that he isn’t the right man to take the club forward next season following yet another disappointment.

Here are three reasons why Carvalhal leaving wouldn’t be a disaster for Wednesday…

They may need a fresh start

After two successive disappointments in the play-offs, the Sheffield Wednesday board and supporters may feel that a change is in the best interests of the club in order to give them a fresh start and the best chance of going up next year.

If Carvalhal does go, his successor would bring new ideas and perhaps a couple of additions that would strengthen the squad and shake things up a little, and that could be key to the Owls trying to target a spot in the top two next season.

They should have done better

While Carvalhal certainly had a number of injury problems to deal throughout the season, there will still be some people that feel the Owls should have done better with the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper in their squad.

Wednesday took just five points from seven matches during a disappointing spell between February and April and they will be thinking about what could have been after following that up with six straight wins.

They may score more goals

As we mentioned before Carvalhal had a lot of firepower at his disposal this season, but aside from the brilliant 5-1 win against Norwich at Hillsborough in March, they rarely showed it.

The Portuguese manager’s style has been conservative at time considering some of the attacking players he had available, and it was shown by the fact they scored just 60 goals in 46 Championship matches throughout the campaign and then just one in the two legs of their play-off semi-final against Huddersfield.

In fact, both Fulham and the Canaries scored 25 more goals while even Nottingham Forest – who finished 21st and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day – were also more prolific.

Owls supporters would certainly be hopeful that a new boss would play more attacking football.
