Everton will be looking to bounce back from defeat in the Merseyside derby on Saturday and continue their push to secure European football next term when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The injury-hit Toffees were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend, as goals from Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi cancelled out Matthew Pennington’s first half equaliser for Ronald Koeman’s side.

Despite the loss, the three teams directly above Everton in the Premier League table – Arsenal, United and Manchester City all drew, so Koeman’s men didn’t lose too much ground as they look to finish as high up the standings as possible.

In fact, the Merseyside outfit know that they will leapfrog the Red Devils if they can pull off a win at the Theatre of Dreams in midweek, and they will certainly be confident of doing just that despite the fact that Jose Mourinho's side are unbeaten in 19 top flight matches.

Here are three reasons Everton will take all three points back to Goodison Park on Tuesday night…

They can frustrate United

Despite the fact that they haven’t been beaten in the Premier League since October, this is a Manchester United team that is a long way behind the force that they once were.

Ronald Koeman will certainly know that Jose Mourinho’s men are there for the taking on Tuesday night, especially as they have drawn four of their last five league matches at Old Trafford – including against Hull City, Bournemouth and West Bromwich Albion, where they only scored once.

The latter particularly frustrated Mourinho’s side during their goalless draw on Saturday, and Koeman will hope that he has the defensive strength to do the same, and the firepower to nick a goal at the other end.

Ronald Koeman's Old Trafford record

The Dutchman has an impressive 100% record at Old Trafford in the Premier League having won 1-0 there in both of his seasons with Southampton, and he will be confident that he can mastermind a third straight success there on Tuesday night.

Everton need the three points to keep their hopes of finishing in the top four alive, and Koeman will know that this is a great opportunity to beat a Manchester United team that are currently struggling to break down the opposition at their famous home.

They have Romelu Lukaku

As we mentioned previously, if Everton can frustrate United from a defensive point of view as the likes of Hull City, Bournemouth and West Brom have done in recent weeks, then they certainly have the players at the other end of the pitch to make the Red Devils pay.

In a game where Ronald Koeman could choose to utilise the counter attack, he knows he will be able to rely on the Premier League’s top goalscorer – Lukaku – to find the net if he is given an opportunity.
