According to reports on Football Insider, Leeds United striker Chris Wood is understood to be a £15m target for Everton this summer.
Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is keen to strengthen his attacking options with the uncertainty over the future of top scorer Romelu Lukaku, who has told the club that he won’t be signing a new deal.
The Dutchman is now looking for potential replacements for the Belgian and is said to have been impressed with the leading marksman in the Championship, and is ready to make a move at the end of the season if Garry Monk’s side – who currently lie in fourth position – fail to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Wood has scored 24 goals in 36 appearances in England’s second tier this term, but it is not guaranteed that he could bring that sort of form to Goodison Park.
Here are THREE reasons Wood would not be a success if he made the move to Merseyside…
Experience
Despite his fine form in England’s second tier this season, Wood has little experience of playing in the top flight during his career and he could find the step up difficult.
The 25-year-old has made just 10 Premier League appearances during spells with West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, with the majority of those coming in 2014.
If Koeman was looking for a replacement – or an alternative – for Romelu Lukaku, then signing the New Zealand international for £15m would certainly be something of a risk.
Goals
While you may be a prolific finisher at Championship level, it is never guaranteed that you will make the transition to the Premier League.
Even in recent seasons, the likes of Rudy Gestede and Jordan Rhodes have been regular scorers in England’s second tier, but both players have failed to establish themselves in the top flight.
While Wood would move to Goodison Park in confident mood because of his goalscoring exploits this term, a few matches without a goal could soon extinguish it.
Pressure
If Wood was to cost Everton £15m, it would instantly put pressure on him to be a success at Goodison Park.
Of course, if he turned out to be a replacement for Romelu Lukaku there would be even more expectancy on his shoulders to try and replicate the goalscoring of the Belgian.
As we all know, football rarely works like that though and the 25-year-old would almost certainly need some time to get used to the improved defenders he would be facing on a weekly basis.
